The plastic device, which has gone by many names but is most commonly called the ‘pizza saver,’ was developed by Carmela Vitale from Dix Hills, New York. Carmela filed for the patent in 1983 and received it almost exactly two years to the day in 1985.

The invention of the pizza saver is based around the science behind pizza boxes. When ready to be delivered, pizzas are often placed in a corrugated cardboard box which keeps them warm. However, the boxes do have one flaw: The steam created by the pizzas makes the cardboard soggy.
